Dual-Booting Windows XP and Vista Have you purchased a
new computer since the release of Windows Vista, and are less
than satisfied with it's performance and compatability? This is
how I fix the problem and when done properly you'll have Beauty
(Vista) and the Beast (XP) all in one computer.
BEFORE
YOU TRY THIS,
PLEASE BACKUP YOUR DATA!
If you have Vista installed and
want to dual boot XP:
- BACKUP DATA IF YOU HAVE IMPORTANT DATA.
- Decide the drive space for XP. I recommend at least 40G.
- Go to Vista/Control panel/Administrative tools/Computer
management/Disk management. Select primary partition. Right
click and select Shrink volume to shrink the primary
partition. For example, you have 500G hard drive and want
100G for XP. Shrink the primary partition from 500G to 400G.
- Select new created volume and format the new partition
-100G. Vista will automatically assign the drive letter.
Let’s say drive D
- Insert your XP setup CD/DVD and Reboot PC.
- Install XP on the new drive D.
- Reboot to XP. (you won’t be able to see Vista at this
point)
- When you log on to XP. Download the free
VistaBootPRO. If you don’t have Internet connection,
please download it before installation.
Here is the link.
- Install and run VistaBootPro.
You must have .net
framework 2.0 installed in order to run VistaBootPro. If you
don't have, there will be a link provided during the install
or
get it here.
- Open VistaBootPro. Bypass the backup message.
- Click System Bootloader.
Select 'Windows Vista Bootloader' and 'all drives'.
- Click 'Install Bootloader' button to install.
- Select 'Run Diagnostics' from Diagnostics menu. You will
see the Vista and XP menu.
- Rename them if you want. PLEASE DON’T CHANGE BOOT
DEVICE IN THE 'CHANGE BOOT DEVICE' OPTION BOX! DO NOT!
- Click 'Apply Update' to update settings.
- Reboot PC. You should see the boot options for Vista and
XP.
Actually, there are more ways of dual-booting your computer.
Please read the articles thoroughly before proceeding. The end
result will be well worth the time spent. |
